Fund Raising Initiatives

Since 1939 the Barnstable Historical Society has taken an important role in documenting the cultural heritage and maritime history of the seven villages of the Town of Barnstable. Our mission is to keep local history alive, approachable and accessible to researchers, students, and the public by maintaining and preserving a growing collection of historically significant artifacts and documents in the Barnstable Historical Society Museum. We are grateful for your consideration and support to be an integral part of this important mission. Local history is inspirational – and will be for future generations.

As a key source of financial support, your donation is urgently needed in supporting museum operations including exhibit enhancement, artifact storage, new acquisitions, artifact repairs, special programs, professional fees, information technology, building maintenance and improvement, and more. Barnstable Historical Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and your donation may be tax deductible.

Building Repairs and Restoration Projects

The Phinney-Jones house is getting some much needed care and attention. While we wait for the review and approval of our submittal for a CPC grant to do  repairs to the inside of the building – we are also working on some the exterior repairs to the building as well.  Providing a safe place to house important artifacts of our Barnstable history is a responsibility to our history that we take seriously. But, years of weather has taken its toll on many parts of the building that must be urgently repaired. Please consider a Building Restoration donation to help focus additional funds needed for exterior repairs and painting to restore this beautiful site.

Lisa Blair Memorial Gardens Donation

A garden is a labor of love, an artistic expression. The Lisa Blair Memorial Garden honors the memory of our long-time curator, Lisa Tulis Blair. Stroll through the gardens or sit in any one of our garden benches to enjoy some the beautiful local native plant species. Like many gardens there is something new all the time. Feel free to drop in on any Monday to join our gardeners with any number of activities to grow and improve the landscape. BHS director and garden extraordinaire Jamie Hunsaker welcomes your donation of plants as well as time spent weeding and planting in the gardens. If time and digging are not your thing, but you would like to contribute we welcome your financial donation to support the care and feeding of the grounds.

Donate an Artifact

The Barnstable Historical Society Museum’s collection and exhibits are made up largely of artifacts and materials donated by the public. We appreciate your desire to become involved in preserving the cultural heritage and maritime history of the Town of Barnstable through these artifacts and materials. To document the history of the seven villages of the Town of Barnstable, the BHS Museum collects artifacts that represent the Town’s history, ‪from the 17th century ballooning to the 20th century. Artifacts and materials include 3D objects, photographs, paintings, textual documents, manuscripts, ephemera, postcards, audiovisual materials, books, pamphlets and more.  Because of space and care requirements, the BHS staff must consider every donation offer very carefully. To determine whether the Museum is the best fit for your item(s), please provide as much information as possible on the Artifact Donation Form below.  Your information will help the BHS staff make a well-informed decision. Should you have any questions about the donation process please contact us via phone (‪508-362-2982) or email (barnhist@outlook.com)
